She’s always known she’s going to find her happy ending. She just never realized, before it was too late, that she didn’t need a charmed life to be happy. She’d had all she needed, really, back on the island. She’d had Mal and their friends. She had been happy, despite still living underneath her wicked mother’s roof. She had had everything she needed.

And now she’s living a lie. She is happy sometimes but not nearly as much as she acts. She cares about the boy beside her. He’s become her new best friend, but he’ll only ever be her friend. Evie can’t see him as anything more than that, because her heart belongs to another.

It has for years now, for long before they left the island, way back when they were still children. She’d been looking for a happy ending that she’d been convinced couldn’t happen on the island, but she hadn’t needed to come here to Auradon to get it. She hadn’t needed a Prince, or even a Princess. Mal had been her happy ending all along.

Evie barely holds back her tears as her former best friend hugs her tightly on her wedding day. “You should’ve caught the bouquet,” she whispers. Evie looks at her, horrified. “What? Now that Ben and I are happily married, it’s your and Doug’s turn.”

“I don’t need a guy,” Evie whispers quickly, “for my happily ever after ending.”

Mal stops. “Of course not,” she says, looking into Evie’s eyes. She smiles. “Your ending’s going to be fabulous, no matter when you marry or even if you do.”

I won’t. The words are on the tip of Evie’s tongue, but she swallows them down just in time to keep from speaking them aloud.

“Hey,” Mal asks, suddenly concerned, “are you okay?”

“I’m fine!” Evie exclaims, a little too brightly and quickly. The old Mal would have caught onto the deception, but this Mal, the new Princess heir of Auradon, a land Evie dreamed about coming to since she was just a little girl barely old enough to understand the differences between this magical place and the isle, doesn’t even blink an eye. She just smiles. “I’m not going to be far, you know.”

“Of course not.”

Mal hugs her, more tightly this time. “And you can visit any time you like.”

“Of course.”

Ben approaches. Doug comes up and silently takes Evie’s hand as she watches Mal ride away with her Prince. He squeezes it as she forces down her tears. You’re already further than you think. The lament whispers through her mind. Mal will never be the same. They will never be the same. She’d found her happy ending, but now she belongs to another person.

Doug doesn’t speak as he pulls Evie away from the crowd. It’s only when they’re in her room, her door securely shut, that he takes her in his arms and Evie finally lets her tears begin. Her Mal is gone.
