She stares in horror at what she’s done. His blood is on her again, but this time, it isn’t simply from knocking him out before he could hurt her or worse. Her hands are cupped around her mouth to silence her scream or sob, but right now, she doesn’t feel like she can emit a sound.

But then Ivy is there, her arms around her, squeezing her gently, swaying her . . . “I had to do it,” Harley whispers. “I had to or he’d’ve hurt you again.”

“I know, Harls,” Ivy whispers back, squeezing her a little harder, a reminder that she’s not going to let go but she’s also never going to hold her back as he did. “You probably saved my life.”

“I did, didn’t I?” But that doesn’t change the fact of what she’s done. Nothing can. Mister J is never going to smile again, never going to laugh again, never going to call her “sugar” again or be called sugar by her. But he’s also never going to hurt her or her Pam-a-lamb again. He’s never going to hurt anybody ever again, because of her.

She’s a killer. She has been for years, but this kill is different. This kill is personal. This kill . . . She killed the only man she’s ever loved to protect the only woman she’s ever loved, the only person who has ever loved her.

Joker never loved her. He was incapable of love, but he wasn’t incapable of murder. He would have killed Ivy. She saved her life. Now the future stretches ahead of them. It should be wide, beautiful, glorious . . . But all she can see is blood, his blood caused by her . . .

Ivy turns her gently. Gently, she takes her hands from her face, brings them down, and squeezes them. Her every move is gentle. Joker was never gentle with her. Nobody’s ever been gentle with her except for Pam-a-lamb.

“It’s okay, Harley. He’s gone now. He’ll never hurt either of us ever again. It’s okay.” Her arms wrap around her; Harley feels the first touch of warmth she’s felt since Joker caught them together.

Ivy steps closer, squeezing her. She feels her vines wrap tenderly around her ankles and start spreading up her legs. They tug her closer still to their creator, whose every touch is gentle, whose every touch has always been gentle to her. She’s always loved her. Joker never could have.

Still, Harley wishes there could have been another way, any way other than killing him for them to be together, but she knows there wasn’t. He would have killed them both, or perhaps made them suffer fates worse than death. He’d always been good at that after all. The future is theirs, but there was only one way to get it.

“He’s gone,” Pammy whispers again in her ear, and this time, finally, Harley smiles. He is gone, and Pammy’s still here. Her love is hers. The future is theirs, and it’s going to be okay.

The End
