“It was supposed to be my interview!” Lois grumbles, stalking off. Clark just lets her go, because he can’t take his eyes from something he’d never thought he’d see again.

Chloe stops beside him, her eyes darting between his wide, blue eyes and the multibillionaire on the television. “Hey, is that -- “ she asks, noticing the ring on Lex’s wedding finger.

Clark nods mutely. He tries to talk but can’t seem to form actual words. She hits him in the chest with the load of papers she’s carrying, finally making him blink and look down at her. “What are you still standing around here for?” she demands. “Go!”

“But -- “

“Go!” she repeats again. “He’s never worn it in public before, has he?”

Clark mutely shakes his head.

“Then get out of here already!” She pushes him, and a small peal of giddy laughter actually breaks free from his lips. He needs no further encouragement as he runs past Jimmy Olsen and out of the Daily Planet. Quickly he finds a dark alley in which to change and then zips through the sky. A faster blue, red, and white blur has never been seen, not even when he’s been fighting to save the entire planet.

He lands on top of the roof of LuthorCorp. His breathing shaky, he looks around, but there’s no sign of Lex. Then, suddenly, a door opens, and the man he used to love with all his heart, the man he still loves no matter how many times they’ve squared off against one another, is walking toward him. Lex greets him with a smile. “Clark!”

His eyes touch his, and in that moment, memories rush over Clark Kent. The steel mask of the Superman is gone as he remembers caressing hands, seeking tongues, hot lips, and two bodies desperately trying to make the hot days of Summer last forever. They had not lasted forever, neither the days nor their unions, but yet here Lex is again, wearing his ring.

“You came!”

“Of course I came,” Clark says in a breathless rush. He’s never really needed to breathe so badly in all his life. “You wore it!”

Lex looks down at the ring and remembers his young lover’s strong hands taking a piece of metal from an old tractor and shaping it into a ring that’s come to mean so much to the both of them. “You told me to put it on again when I was done fighting, when I was through trying to be someone I’m not -- “

“Are you?”

“Did you not listen to the interview?”

Clark shakes his head. “I just saw -- “

“I just came out in front of the world, Clark. I always thought I’d do so with you at my side.”

Clark closes the distance between them in the space it takes Lex’s heart to beat once. “Well, I’m here now,” he says and, without any further hesitation, takes him into his arms and kisses him like he should have long ago.
