Martha walked into the barn, intent on telling her boys that dinner was ready to be set out on the table. She stopped, however, when she heard a lovely sound. Turning toward the charming, almost musical laughter, she caught sight of her son gazing at his new best friend with a huge smile on his face. She’d never seen Clark light up the way he did around Lex, not even around Lana, but it wasn’t Clark who was laughing. Lex Luthor actually had his head tossed back, his entire body shaking slightly with his merry laughter.
Martha watched the sight for just a moment, knowing they hadn’t seen her and being glad that she had not called out to them. She watched Clark wrap his arms around Lex’s waist, pull him close, and kiss him. When that kiss deepened, Martha still didn’t interrupt them. She just turned and went quickly about her business. Dinner could always be heated up after all, but it wasn’t every day that a young man with so much dark despair always burdening him down, as Lex had had since she’d first known the boy, found reason to laugh and love.
“Martha! Have you seen Clark? He hasn’t fed the pigs yet!”
“He will, Jonathan.”
Jonathan frowned at the look on her face which must have given her away. “You’ve seen him -- “
“Yes, and you’re not interrupting them right now.”
“What do you mean them?”
“Lex dropped by again.”
“Again?! That boy has other places to be and other people to bother -- “
“Oh, Jonathan, he’s not a bother.” Still smiling, Martha reached out and grabbed her husband’s hands before he could charge pass her and to the barn. She pulled him close. “They’re happy together,” she told him softly. “Can’t you be happy for them?”
“What do you mean ‘happy together’?!” he blustered.
“Jonathan, you know what I mean -- “
“Martha, I know what you think, but they’re only friends, and I wish they weren’t that even! That boy is a bad influence on our son!”
“He’s as much of a bad influence as you were on me. My Father couldn’t stand you any more than you like Lex.”
“That was different.”
“No, sweetheart, it really wasn’t.” She tugged on his hands, pulling him closer. Then she kissed him again and again. She knew how to control her man, and soon Jonathan had forgotten all about Lex.
