Wesley cursed quietly to himself as he stubbed his toe on the edge of the crib. No swearing in front of the baby, he thought to himself. He gently lifted Connor up, retrieved a bottle from the small hotel room fridge, and reached his hand out in the blackness, searching for the rocking chair. His hand closed over the smooth wooden arm and he slowly lowered himself and Connor down; tickling the baby’s mouth with the edge of the nipple until he began to suckle the milk. Wesley rocked back and forth, enjoying the peace, quiet, and dark.
Angel used to be the first one beside the crib if Connor cried. Now it could be either of them reaching their son first, tending to his needs. Wesley took this as a good thing. Not because he wanted lost sleep and sore toes, but because it meant that Angel trusted Wesley to meet all of Connor’s requirements, and didn’t feel an impetus to always be in charge anymore. Wesley felt Connor’s body slacken as he fell back into the deep sleep only babies seemed to enjoy. He stood and carefully placed him back in the crib, covering him with a soft blue blanket, readjusting the stuffed animals, and placing a tiny kiss to his forehead. “I love you, Connor. Sweet dreams.” he whispered before tiptoeing back to his own bed and slipping between the covers.
He felt Angel stirring beside him. “Wes? Is Connor okay?” he mumbled, still half-asleep.
Wesley brushed a kiss against his cheek and spooned up against his back. “Shh. It’s fine. He was just hungry.” he whispered.
Angel snuggled back up against him. “You’re a really good Dad, Wes. I love you.”
“I love you, too.” whispered Wesley. He closed his eyes and drifted back to sleep.
