Dorothy paused in the hallway as she watched Blanche walk pass her, moving one sultry hip at a time. It was a scene of beauty and of power, and it made Dorothy feel so weak in her knees that she had to lean against her own door for support. She shoved her knuckles against her mouth to keep from moaning aloud. Dear Lord, but the woman was beautiful!

It didn’t help that Blanche knew it and used every ounce of her beauty for power to gain whatever she wanted. Men and women became putty in her hands, and it wasn’t always simply because the women wanted to be more like her. Dorothy would have loved to have her confidence, but she knew she’d never be nearly as beautiful as Blanche.

What she did hope for seemed as impossible. She longed for a day when Blanche would choose to come to her not just because she found herself miserable in a rare time without a man but because she chose her over men. It was impossible, Dorothy admitted to herself as she watched her housemate walk. That woman could have any man, or woman, she wanted. Why would she ever choose her?!

She wouldn’t, Dorothy knew. It was simply that she was convenient that had allowed her the few nights she had had with Blanche; their love would never be more than just a string of one-night stands quickly forgotten and never spoken about to Blanche. Blanche paused at the end of the hall and shot Dorothy a look over her silk-clad shoulder. Dorothy moaned against her fist, but her other hand finally released her doorknob.

She peeled herself off of the safety of her room and followed Blanche. She’d always follow Blanche, she realized. To her, Blanche was far more than just the most beautiful woman she’d ever seen, the most passionate lover she’d ever experienced, or her dearest, most treasured friend. Out of all of Dorothy’s past flames -- not that she’d ever have nearly as many as Blanche --, she was the only one Dorothy still wanted, the only one she still loved, the only one she could not and would never move beyond.

Dorothy sighed. It was better by far, she thought, to have her as a friend and occasional lover than to not have her at all, and she would treasure however many nights she did get with Blanche, no matter how often men got in the way. She followed her now to a table set with cheesecake and candle light, and as they dined, gazing into each other’s eyes as the rest of their little family slept, Dorothy dared to hope. Maybe one day she would earn more than just the occasional night with this remarkable, breathtakingly beautiful woman. Regardless she’d settle for what she did have with her quite happily, because to have Blanche in any aspect was far better than to never have her at all. She was a winner every time Blanche chose her.
