Lex tried to ignore the sweatiness and shakiness of the palm in his hand. He knew Clark was nervous, and he knew he was hurting. Yet he also knew they were doing the right thing. Perhaps this wasn’t the right place for it, but his baby was the one who had wanted to come. He had asked to come, and yes, perhaps it was in part due to the alcohol and red kryptonite, but it was also because they had wanted to do this for so very long now.
Lex looked around. There were no familiar faces in the room. There were only other couples waiting to do the very same thing they were about to do. He hadn’t wanted to do it here. He had never wanted a slimy Las Vegas wedding, but the chapel wasn’t really slimy. It did have some class to it --, but of course, a real church would have had much more class, much more beauty, much more . . .
He sighed, his head lowering. This wasn’t right, and he was done lying to himself and to Clark. The man he loved more than he’d ever thought he could love anything or one deserved far more than anything this casino could offer them, even if it wasn’t owned by LuthorCorp. Taking Clark’s other hand in his, he turned to face his fiance.
His mouth opened, but before he could talk, another voice screamed out, “STOP THE WEDDING!”
The couple turned and looked together. Lex’s mouth fell agape while Clark’s eyes nearly bugged out of his head. “MOM!” he shouted. “WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!”
Martha moved quickly through the crowd. “CLARK, STOP THIS INSANITY! LEX, YOU CAN’T LET HIM GO THROUGH WITH THIS!”
“DAD?!” Clark’s hands suddenly tightened their grips on Lex’s.
“I know, Missus Kent,” Lex spoke humbly and quietly as Martha and Jonathan caught up with them.
“Son, this ain’t right -- “ Jonathan started.
“Yes, it is, Dad! I love Lex, and I’m going to marry him!”
“Okay.”
Clark gawked. “What?!”
“I said okay. Just not here.”
“Not like this,” Martha added. There were already tears in her eyes, and now tears were springing into Lex’s and Clark’s. Even Jonathan’s orbs seemed moist to his only son. “You deserve a wedding you’ll always remember,” Martha said gently.
“With your family,” Jonathan spoke up again, “and your friends all around you.”
“Dad -- “
“Clark, I’m saying you can marry him! Yes, Lex is a Luthor, and a guy, but he makes you happy. And I guess your mom’s right: that’s all that should matter.”
“That is all that matters,” Martha whispered, “as for as their love goes, but that love should not be celebrated in a place like this!”
“Mom -- Dad -- “ Clark was choking on his words.
Lex took charge. “You’re right of course, Missus Kent. I’m sorry, Clark, but we’re not getting married today.”
“Mister Luthor?”
“We’re going to have a real wedding and spare no expenses.”
“And I’m going to give you away,” Jonathan concluded proudly.
