Swords clanging, screams echoing, rain mixing with blood… it was the end of the world, all right. Angel stood above the alley, looking down from the rooftop as Illyria and Spike cut their ways through the horde of demons, leaving a bloody trail behind them.
He frowned, feeling a hand on his shoulder, covering it with his own.
“There’s nothing you can do now,” a gentle voice said. “Only hurt yourself further by watching…” Angel turned away, refusing to acknowledge the owner of the voice.
“I know, but… I should be down there, helping them.”
“You did your part…” the voice reminded him, and Angel finally looked up, meeting familiar eyes.
“I just… I’m going to miss them,” Angel said softly, before turning around. “I mean, I didn’t think that everything would end tonight. I knew there was a chance, but…” Angel shrugged, trailing off into silence.
“We can’t stay much longer,” the voice said, and Angel turned to cast one last look down at the alley. Angel didn’t respond, watching as Spike and Illyria kept fighting, with grim determination and tears on Spike’s face. They would be fine… Spike could keep Illyria under control.
“Let’s go home,” Angel said, turning away.
