Xander woke slowly, rising from the haze of a restful sleep. The best he'd had in years.
When the memories of the last few days slammed into him, he jerked awake, gasping at the pain in body.
He froze and realized that he had gasped and he still hurt...and his heart was pounding.
Human. he thought, confused. Still human.
He squinted to try and look around the dim room. Slowly, his eyes adjusted to the low light and he found himself staring into hard, amused brown eyes.
As Xander took in Angelus staring at him across the room, his stomach did flips and his heart rate accelerated until he wondered if could die from excitement and anticipation.
The dark vampire sat in a large leather chair, one leg casually crossed over his knee at the ankle and his fingers steepled under his chin as he silently regarded the trembling boy.
Unable to take the tension any longer, Xander quietly whispered, "Angelus?"
The corners of the vampire's soft lips curved upward minimally before quietly answering, "What can I do for you, boy?"
"I'm…" Xander paused. He didn't want to sound childish or stupid, but he was confused. "I'm not a vampire?"
Angelus smirked lightly at the delicate question. He motioned toward the small table next to the bed. When Xander turned to look, there was a small silver cross on a delicate chain waiting for him.
"See for yourself," the vampire purred.
Slowly, Xander reached out with a shaking hand, unsure what to expect. Once his hand came into contact with the cool metal, he jerked back slightly. Laughing at himself quietly, the nervous boy picked up the necklace and held it tightly in his fist, amazed that it didn't burn.
He turned sad eyes toward the vampire. "Why?" he asked, trying to hold back the tears that threatened to fall.
He watched as Angelus gracefully unfolded himself, rose from the chair and stalked toward the bed. The edge of the mattress depressed with the vampire's weight as Angelus sat, pulling the delicate cross from the boy's grip before laying it back into position on the table.
"You want to know why I didn't turn you?"
Xander simply nodded, unable to meet the vampire's eyes.
"You're young, boy, and much too gangly for my tastes, not that I haven't enjoyed using you. I had to deal with that with William and I'm not doing it again. We'll wait until you're older, bigger, let you mature a bit before your turning."
Pleading hazel eyes turned to steely brown ones. "Then what am I?"
Angelus smirked, wicked glee shining brightly on his face. "You are mine. Claimed by me. A pet, if you will. Do you feel it?"
Xander stopped and simply felt. He could feel it. The need, the pull toward the vampire hovering so close he could practically taste him. Xander turned as he lifted amused hazel eyes that flashed green for a moment and licked his lips in anticipation.
"Yes."
