Xander watched as the Slayer and the Master attacked each other with a vengeance. The sound of metal on metal rang throughout the mansion, echoing through the emptied halls.
The boy envied the Slayer and the power in her deceivingly delicate body. She was strong and powerful and determined to beat back her foe.
Xander marveled at the grace of the vampire as he toyed with the Slayer like a panther playing with a rat, drawing her in before beating her back and then starting all over again.
The battle was intense. Xander flinched and cringed, mentally cheering one side and then the other.
One swing of the Slayer's sword frightened Xander and he gasped loudly in fear. Hearing him, Angelus turned to check on the boy. In that split second, Buffy pressed her advantage, sweeping her leg out to catch the vampire unaware and drive him to his knees.
Xander watched in horror as Angelus froze, kneeling on the floor at the Slayer's feet. Angelus gasped, pain etched on his every feature as he gasped out a single word.
"No."
As Xander watched, Angelus writhed, back arching and mouth working soundlessly. The vampire began to glow, as if an internal light was fighting to get out, blazing from his every pore.
It was over as quickly as it started and Xander blinked back as the light was abruptly extinguished. He looked up in time to see Buffy cock back her arm, readying to bring the sword down for the killing blow.
They both froze when the vampire looked at the Slayer with fear and pain in his eyes and whispered, "Buffy?"
"Angel?" Buffy whispered.
"Buffy? What's going on?"
Xander stood frozen as the former lovers stared at each other in silence. Finally, it all became too much and Xander's defense mechanism kicked in.
"Oh, this is just perfect."
The sarcastically muttered words drew the vampire's attention. As Angel studied the boy, his eyes began to bleed from brown to gold, skin rippled and fangs descended. His name was purred, sinful and smooth.
"Xander."
"Angelus?" Xander whispered, his voice full of hope until the vampire was gone, replaced by the human mask and Angel collapsed in a heap.
Xander looked up as the Slayer approached him. She looked worse for wear, but she was as beautiful as always. He smiled as she stopped in front of him.
"You did it. Beat the big bad and got your boyfriend back. Good job, Buffy."
But Buffy wasn't smiling.
"I'm so sorry, Xander," she whispered, tears filling her green eyes.
Xander tried to respond, to ask why, when the air in his lungs was suddenly thrust out in a surprised gasp. Slowly, he looked down at the sword protruding from his gut.
The humour of the situation struck Xander and he began to laugh despite the pain.
He laughed, wild and manic, but inside he longed to scream and cry.
But Xander knew if he started, he would never be able to stop.
