Everything hurt as Buffy woke but she struggled to rise to her feet to search for Angel and Xander. Her vision was slightly blurry, most likely from the head trauma, but slowly a figure came into focus. She called out, "Spike?"

The blond vampire turned slowly. His soft growl was her only answer.

"What happened?"

"You have no idea, do you, you stupid bitch."

Buffy flinched, as if struck by a blow. He turned to face her fully and she saw the bundle cradled gently in his arms. Blood dripped from Drusilla's head where Buffy had struck her at the beginning of the battle.

"You just sent your boyfriend and your best friend to a hell dimension when it should have been you."

Buffy shook her head in denial. "No. Angelus was going to open the portal and bring hell on earth."

Spike laughed at her, cold and harsh and condescending.

"You honestly believe that a creature that feasts on the blood of humans would destroy his entire food source? You really put too much faith in your books. I'm sure there's a brain somewhere in that thick head of yours. Maybe someday you'll put it to good use."

Buffy closed her eyes, trying to block out the truth. "But Xander..?"

"Xander took your place as a warrior god in Acathla's world with your boyfriend at his side. They've been an item for weeks, you know?"

Buffy's world swam and she stumbled, landing harshly on the stone platform at the demon's feet. She couldn't believe, wouldn't believe it.

"Don't believe me? Tell your brilliant Watcher to check the Lyrian Diaries. I'm sure you'll find some interesting reading on inter-dimensional portals. Or ask his mum, or better yet, his dad, you never bothered to check on his homelife, did you!?"

Spike's voice had risen to a roar as he slipped into his game face to yell at the Slayer cowering beneath him. The vampire in his arms stirred, crying as soon as she woke.

"Spike," Drusilla wailed. "The man took Daddy and the kitten. I can't even feel them anymore."

"Shh," Spike crooned to the weeping vampire in his arms, trying to comfort his near hysterical sire. "I know, Princess. We're leaving now."

Without another word, Spike turned to leave, cradling the sobbing vampire to his chest.

At the doorway, Drusilla called out, "It appears the only thing more worthy than a Slayer is loyal boy with a pure heart."

Then they were gone.

Alone in the mansion, Buffy stayed, drawing her own blood, reciting the incantation, pulling on the sword with every ounce of her Slayer strength, all to no avail.

The demon didn't want her. He had his warrior.

Buffy knelt at Acathla's feet, her blood and tears mixing with Xander's, creating a sacrifice the demon didn't want.

Darkness fell over Sunnydale, deep and oppressive. It enveloped the mansion, heavy and complete. It crept over the Slayer, closing in on the weeping girl until it penetrated her very soul.

And that, my friends, is the end of the dark'verse. What? You were expecting a happy ending for a series called the dark'verse? *g* I will consider a sequel if there is enough interest in it, but I need to give poor Stanzie, my muse, a break from Angelus. He's been a bad influence on her. I had thought to do a series of when Angel and Xander come back from hell, but I'm considering one that is brief glances of their life in Acathla's world. We'll see what she decides to do.

All flames, stones and nasty words are to be directed through [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip. She's my flame watchdog...and I wouldn't piss her off if I were you. *g*
