Misfitting Completion
Fandom: Angel
Summary: Love is just on the other side of hate.
Rating: G
Pairing: Spike/Angel

DISCLAIMER: Points if you can guess where the Russian nesting doll is from. It’s not too hard, I don't think. Oh, and Joss is the creator of most everything in this ficlet.

Love is just on the other side of hate. It’s that double-edged sword, the two-sided coin. The emotions are essentially one, blending in with each other. The hate ebbs into longing, the love into jealousy. They are intertwined. He’s never felt so strongly about anyone, never wanted to kill anyone more than him. He’s never been able to not kill someone as much as Angel. Angelus. Liam. Pick a name. They are all the same, just like love and hate. Just like Spike and William.

Their relationship reminds him, when he is feeling in an especially introspective mood and can’t escape the sappiness of the soul and his surroundings, of one of those Russian nesting dolls. There are layers upon layers of history between them — jealousy, hatred, familial relations, duty, respect, and other things they’ve been men enough to acknowledge. Then the little wind-up mouse waddles out from the last layer and everything isn’t as it seemed. That little rodent is their love. Totally unexpected, something twisted and misfitting. It doesn’t feel right, and yet, what would that particular doll be without the surprise mouse inside? It would not be as unique, as remarkable.

That's what the two of them are: remarkable. Sometimes, it scares him, others it is a comfort. They’re the opposites of each other. They’re nestled inside each other. Angel. Spike. Liam. William. Angelus. All of them, every facet of themselves and each other. If only he could find a way to combine them all, and become one. Then, everything would be all right. At least, that is what he hopes. Looking at the defeated slump in Angel’s shoulders as he walks across the lobby, Spike wonders how much love he has to give, and if it could ever be enough to save the both of them.
