"Xander," the shaman prodded quietly, the name sounding odd through the stone-like teeth, harsh and then silky 'K-Sander', "We must to leave. The light become dim. We must away the keep."

Slowly, the boy nodded as he gazed out to the horizon, smiling at the beauty of the twin suns dipping behind the mountains.

Suddenly, he gasped, spinning to look at his companion. "Angel," he whispered. "Did you notice?"

The vampire's face was turned up to the warmth of the fading light.

"Hello!" Xander shouted, his excitement raising his range an octave. "Do you not notice how much you are not on fire!?"

A single warm brown eye opened to take in the smiling boy. "Yeah, Xander," Angel nearly purred. "I noticed."

The shaman stepped forward, laying a gentle hand on Xander's arm, blatantly ignoring the vampire's answering growl.

"It is the twin suns," the elderly demon explained as he led the warrior forward. "It will not hurt the half-breed until only one rises in the season of our discontent."

Xander shook his head. He hoped that some day he would understand the creatures' strange speech, or maybe they'd understand his. The demons parted before them, creating a path until they reached a large carriage pulled by two enormous monsters that looked to be a cross between a water buffalo and a hippopotamus.

Hesitating just slightly, Xander stepped to the front of the carriage as Angel took his right side and the shaman his left. A deep, loud command was shouted and then they were off. It was slow going, but the animals were able to pull the carriage over the rough, hilly terrain.

Xander lost himself for a while, staring out into the wasteland this world had become. He saw barren hills and torched valleys, burnt by sun and fire. As the suns set, the shadows grew, making the landscape shimmer with nightmares.

Out of the corner of his eye, Xander caught a movement and heard a soft plea.

"Stop," he commanded and the carriage came to a halt. Leaning over the side, the sable-haired boy gasped, looking into the face of a wounded demon. This one looked different from the ones that had surrounded them earlier. This one was smaller and had darker skin that shimmered like water and not like stone. The demon cried out, in obvious pain and Xander reached out his hand.

The shaman stopped him with a bruising grip on his wrist.

"You must not touch. She is infected. The Tor'a kahn have killed her."

"I don't understand," Xander whispered.

The shaman paused before turning to Angel and speaking in a language the boy couldn't understand. Sad chocolate eyes turned to him as Angel explained.

"Biological warfare. The enemy sent out a disease that eats their females from the inside out, like flesh eating worms. She's as good as dead."

The carriage jerked again and continued forward as the young girl's cries echoed in Xander's brain.

He wondered if he could survive such evil.
