You didn’t want what he could give you. You wanted what he had. It was what you deserved, after all. After so many years of loyalty. After your blood, sweat, and tears you never cried. After the pain you went through to escape the pain you left behind. They owed you. He owed you.

But you didn’t want what he was offering. You wanted what he had. The only problem was, what he was offering was the closest you could get to what you wanted. A ride in his car (followed by a harder, faster one in the backseat.) A tour of the grand, glass castle (with a detour or two in the janitor’s closets.) He even gave you a handshake and truce (that was rescinded minutes later when you punched him.) You couldn’t be bought.

You deserved what he had, but all you got was him. A victory for some, you’d imagine, but it wasn’t nearly enough for you. He may have been under your skin (inside of you), but you couldn’t get close enough to him. No matter what you did (what he did to you) you could not become Angel.

What you couldn’t have, you would destroy.
