Somebody Else’s
The way Bernie saw it most people were lacking in imagination.
They did what was expected of them, collected their paycheck or their payoff (depending on which side of the law they operated on) and that was enough to keep them happy.
Bernie wasn’t like that. He was always looking for an angle, a way to get more.
If that meant cutting into somebody else’s piece of the pie, that was their tough luck. If you didn’t look out for what was yours you couldn’t blame a guy for taking it away.
Case in point—Mink.
It was a well established fact that Mink was Eddie Dane’s boy but why should that bother Bernie? .
It wasn’t that Mink was such a prize. The kid was pretty enough, but nervous as hell and not all that bright. What really appealed to Bernie was the idea of putting one over on Eddie Dane.
Of course it was dangerous, stepping out with Mink. A good way to get both of them killed but Bernie didn’t worry about that. His little fling with Mink was among the lesser of his indiscretions.
Eddie Dane wasn’t the only one Bernie was putting something over on.
