Spike had been wounded. The type of wound of that made everyone stop what they were doing and stare.

Usually a wounded vampire meant nothing to them; Angel had nearly dusted so many times, that it had become just another part of their life.

But this time was different, and they felt it immediately. The tension in the air was thick as Angel walked out of the elevator with Spike in his arms.

Fred was the first that moved; she’d timidly walked up behind him and placed a hand on Angel’s shoulder.

When he’d spun around in full game face, she had jumped back; her hand placed on her wildly beating heart.

He’d snapped his teeth at her. He’d growled like a beast, threatening to kill her if she came too close.

“Fear only grows stronger if you let yourself be afraid.”

Fred’s mom use to tell her that after waking up screaming from nightmares as a child. She wondered if she’d ever let her mother know how many times that simple statement had given her the courage and the strength to hold on.

“Angel,” she said in her softest voice.

His gold eyes became brown, and he shook a little, his face slowly transformed back to the beautiful man that saved her all those years ago.

He didn’t look at her; all of his attention was given to the broken vampire in his arms.

“He’s got hurt.”

The childlike way Angel said those three simple words caused Fred to tear up.

“I can help him,” she said, trying to force back the uncertainty in her voice.

Her hand reached out slowly and touched a small, blood soaked curl that rested against Spike’s forehead.
