He had nothing against the hat; it was the feathers. They were monstrous, and unnaturally colorful. How many birds contributed to the obscene decoration, and why was it so heavy? He batted yet another feather away from his face. “This is ridiculous,” he complained, but he had no other choice. Merlin’s quality of work depended on his spirits. After a week of shuffling feet, pouting lips, and sullen stares, Arthur had to do something to regain his almost-competent manservant.
He was supposed to have felt demeaned but instead, as Merlin’s face brightened and he shook with laughter, Arthur felt happy.
