Mrs. Betty Shrew was a kind old woman, the sort of neighbor whom you could swipe a cup of sugar from in a pinch. She made a mean cup of tea, could predict the weather a day ahead of time, and was never afraid to bring out the binoculars while she sat out in her front garden to spy on the goings-on of Lower Tadfield. On this particular afternoon, her aging eyes spotted that Blasted Bentley. Mrs. Betty Shrew smiled as she sipped her tea. She liked to observe the two men connected with that vehicle. That No-Good Man With the Dark Glasses and That Sweet Gentleman With the Fine Taste In Sweaters, she called them, having never learned their names. Her aging ears picked up their conversation:

“Honestly, angel, what got into you last night?” The No-Good Man was particularly cranky today.

“Perhaps I overdid it a little.”

Perhaps?” The No-Good Man practically hissed. “I’ll be sore for months!” He stretched his back in a strange manner.

“You could –”

“Yes, I know. I’m making a point.”

Their words were getting fainter, since they were moving closer towards the Youngs’ residence but she still heard That Sweet Gentleman’s reply: “A little pain makes it that much sweeter.”

The No-Good Man scowled. “Sometimes, angel, it isn’t worth all that effort.”

Mrs. Betty Shrew smiled. That No-Good Man must have helped That Sweet Gentleman rearrange the bookshelves in that shop he spoke of. That No-Good Man always complained heartily after exerting himself. Mrs. Betty Shrew thought that That No-Good Man wasn't so no-good after all, since he was constantly helping That Sweet Gentleman.

The men disappeared inside the Youngs’ home. With her aging eyes and her aging ears, Mrs. Betty Shrew carried on with her morning snoop, not missing a beat.
