Hearts
Jack Bailey wanted to kick himself for listening to Dan Stark. He should have known not to try to surprise Liz with a heart-shaped box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day. Did he really think that doing so could magically mend their relationship? When he showed up at Liz’s door unannounced, she promptly sent him away – but not before Jack caught a glimpse of another man, wearing only a pair of white boxers with a pattern of red hearts, in her living room.
Now, as he stood at the familiar silver trailer, with the box of chocolates in his hand, Jack wondered if he might be interrupting Dan as well. The light was on inside. What the Hell, he thought; might as well try. He knocked at the door.
The door swung open to reveal Dan, who was dressed in – did Dillard’s have a sale on these damned things? – boxer shorts identical to the ones Jack had seen minutes earlier.
“Let me guess,” Dan said. “It didn’t go too well with Liz?”
“Remind me not to take your advice anymore.”
“You wanna talk about it?”
“The way you’re dressed?”
“Do you like ‘em? There was a sale at Dillard’s.”
“Very…‘stylish.‘ Dan, I can’t impose on you; obviously you have company tonight.”
“Nope. Just me and Izzy.”
“Then why are you dressed like that?”
“It’s Valentine’s Day. I was waitin’ for you.”
“Excuse me?”
“I gave you bad advice on purpose. I knew you’d be running straight to me after it didn’t work out with Liz.”
“Really?”
“You think I don’t know that you’ve got the hots for me, too?”
Jack went into an instant blush. “How did you know?”
“Never mind that; it’s freakin’ cold out here! Come on in, and let’s eat.” Dan grinned. “Startin’ with the chocolate, of course.”
