The city was full of a million noises. Sirens wailed. Horns blared. People screamed, yelled, and cursed. Construction rattled buildings and windows alike. Each noise was worst than the last one and pierced his fuzzy, pointed ears even more until they laid back against his aching head.
Tommy whimpered and ran toward the safety of the hearse with his beloved Merton chasing hot on his heels. Smog filled his nose and made his sensitive eyes water. Grease, sweat, toxins, and a million other disgusting scents whose origin he'd rather not even consider assaulted his nose.
He forced down the panicked howl building in his throat as he almost ripped the door off of his sweetheart's hearse and dove inside. Whimpering, he balled up into the passenger seat and covered his ears. Merton slid in beside Tommy with an understanding smile. He reached over and patted his furry paw, but Tommy just whimpered again.
"It's too much," Merton agreed, shaking his head. "Way too much. The city's not for us. Let's go home." Tommy still didn't speak as Merton drove away, and for the first time, the Goth began to think that maybe there was something about community college after all.
The traffic was horrible and the people worse. He'd not seen a single thing to improve his opinion of the city the entire time they'd been here, and even the college grounds themselves were filled with too many loud noises. How anybody could ever study in this place was beyond him.
He ached for the simplicity and relative quiet of their home town, and he knew that, as much as the city had disturbed him, his poor love had been hit by it even worse. All of a Werewolf's scents were a thousand times heightened beyond those of a mere mortal such as himself, and Merton was surprised Tommy had made it for as long as he had before beating a hasty retreat back to the hearse. After all, he'd wanted to run back home the moment they'd arrived.
He slid into the interstate and breathed a silent sigh of relief. The roads were still packed and noisy, a wreck just waiting to happen at least every half of a mile if not more often, but they were headed home now. They'd be back soon to their quite, little town. "Tommy, I've been thinking," Merton cleared the air, carefully keeping his senses at full alert. "Maybe a big college isn't for us. Maybe we should just go to college at home."
Tommy whimpered, and Merton smiled at his tiny sound of agreement. "It's settled then," he announced. "We'll enroll this Fall and keep everything just the way it is." Tommy's ears twitched. Merton covered his trembling paw with a hand, though he hated to take it off the wheel. "It's okay," he assured him. "I don't want the city any more than you do." He smiled as Tommy licked his hand and knew they had their answer. "Home it is."
