Sometimes, he longs for independence from this world. He longs to be able to stand up for what he believes in, not just for what the general populace thinks is right. Sometimes he does take a stand against popular opinion. He's sided with Lex more than once when everybody, including his own parents, thought he was wrong. He's taken his side many a time, but they'll never know just how many times he takes it.

He sighs as he makes his landing outside his home. He knows he doesn't have long. They never give him long, and yet his husband is right: They would all turn against him if they knew the truth. Their opinions shouldn't matter, but he's right about that, too: As much as Clark hates to admit it, he does care what others think of him.

He's been branded an outcast before, been branded a villain because of his choices. He had to work too hard and too long to earn their trust again; he never wants that to happen again. He wants the people he's saving to know they can trust him. He doesn't want them to fear him ever again. He can't stand to have his mother or Chloe look at him in revulsion. He can't stand to have his loved ones pull away from him, and he won't tolerate the consideration that if they don't accept him for who he is, perhaps they don't love him as much as they claim.

Still, he thinks, opening the sliding doors and stepping into the home he shares with the love of his life from the balcony overlooking the city, it would be so nice to be accepted just once. He's greeted with a gentle hand sliding smoothly over his jaw, a palm that brings him more love and ecstasy every night than most people will ever know cupping around his neck, and fingers he knows as well as his own curling into his dark hair's ends.

He's not accepted in the world he just left. He's not truly loved by the people for whom he just risked his life yet again to save. But here in this mansion his husband designed for them himself, he is loved. He is accepted. He is home. Clark gives a gentle moan before Lex's lips actually touch his, his blue eyes drifting shut in relish. It's good to be home.
