The Doldrums

Stephen knew he would never become used to the gentle rolling motion of the ship as it sailed through calmer waters. Storms he could cope with; sawing through bones with ease as the blood, rum and saltwater splashed around his ankles but it was that damned stillness that gnawed away at his soul.

So it was with his passion for Jack Aubrey. The nights he spent cresting like breakers against his friend and captain rested far easier in his heart than the quieter moments when they shared their pleasure in music and whispered together as if they were true lovers.
