He is well aware of the whispers. The others don’t understand what he sees in mortality. To the other Angels, the humans are nothing more than playthings, ways to war with their brothers and sisters, animals on whose performances can be betted. They are means of entertainment, nothing more or less, certainly nothing worth falling over.

But they have never felt the warmth of Sam’s smile or seen the way Dean’s eyes light up like they hold all the bright light in the world when he smiles just as Cas. They’ve never known what it’s like to be a part of their own, close knit family, a family who would rather die than ever betray or lose each other. They’ve never known what it’s like to be loved, to be loved above all in a way so very different than the love their Father and they are expected to show one another.

They’ve never found the missing half of their being. They all know the stories of how God first created Adam and Eve, how every human has another half of their soul walking around down there on Earth or already come up or gone below, but another half nonetheless. They’ve never realized that something is missing from their own beings.

Yet Castiel has always known. He’s always known something was wrong, something was different with him. He’s always known there was more in life to want than what Heaven offers. He just never expected to find it on Earth, or with the Winchesters, but now that he has, he’ll never let it go again, consequences be damned.

He’ll stay with Sam and Dean for as long as he can, until they’re both gray and old or their lives have been ended too quickly. Castiel knows, even if they each live to be a hundred or older, their deaths will come too soon, but it’s only when they do eventually pass from this world that Castiel will be ready to leave it behind. Only then will he go freely back to Heaven, as he’s sure the Winchester brothers have a secure place up there.

Only then will he go home, but the trick already is on the other Angels. The secret is, Castiel doesn’t miss Heaven, because it’s not his home. His home is right here, with the other two men, mortal though they may be, who complete his being.
