Exhaustion rippled through her. It made her want to scream and cry all at the same time. She was only vaguely aware that hot tears were streaming down her face as she continued running, her feet seeming to slap the same rhythm as her pounding heart as she fought to get away and stay away from the evil closing in behind her. She was about to scream when a dark figure jumped into her pathway -- and then again, all at once, she wanted to sob. “Red!” she cried, not stopping in time to keep from barreling straight into the big, grey wolf.

The wolf whined softly. “They’re right behind me!” Snow gasped, knowing there was no time for her lover to transform to human so they could fully communicate. The wolf whined more urgently and jerked her lupine head back toward her flanks. “You can’t -- “ Snow stopped as Red growled at her -- at her! -- and looked again at her back.

“Fine, fine,” she muttered, “but when they catch us -- “ Her words failed her as she half-lowered, half-fall onto the wolf’s broad back. Her fingers curled into her fur, and she was fast asleep long before Red hit the darkest parts of the forest. She lost the Queen’s guards in the woods, but it was only near daybreak when the wolf laid down with the woman still sleeping soundly on top of her.

Certain they were safe, hidden away in the very deepest part of the Enchanted Forest and with all seven of the Dwarfs on full alert, Red finally let herself become human again. As her fur dissolved into flesh, she gazed steadfastly onto Snow’s beautiful face. The legends were true: she really did have skin as soft and white as snow and her hair was as black as ebony. She’d never known a greater beauty, or a better person, in her entire life, and Red knew she never would.

Snow moaned in her sleep. Red reached out with a hand that was not entirely human yet and softly brushed her shoulder. As she became more human, she wrapped her arms around Snow and held her close. “You’re safe now,” she whispered into her ear. Then, when she was certain none, including Snow could hear her, she added, “I love you.” Snow stopped trembling and moaning in her sleep and smiled instead. Red’s heart soared at the image.
