There's not enough air in here, the air is stuffy, the air is thin, we say.
We mean gas. This gas cloud is not optimal for my species. Human languages tend to use such shortcuts. Of course, the useage has its ancestry. Aren't we beyond that, though? What's not optimal at some given time or for some given purpose is not necessarily wrong.
These are the things that go through my mind when I bed someone who is... not an optimal match for my species.

I can take the headaches. She's worth every twinge.
