It never failed. Every time Nick turned off the Santa Monica Freeway onto Ocean Avenue, he smiled. Sometimes he even detoured deliberately, just so he could drive by the aging structure and take a look. It hadn't changed much over the years but the unassuming sign said it all: "Hotel California." The name alone conjured up bizarre images and melodies from the past, but in truth, the hotel had been there over sixty years; longer than the song had been around.
The old building held a personal history for Nick - it was where he and Kevin had begun.
Tonight, it was where they would begin again.
Time and distance had come between them and it had taken a toll on their careers and especially, their relationship. Harsh words were spoken, silences stretched well beyond their breaking point until there was no solution except dissolution.
Goodbyes were scribbled on scraps of paper because eye contact would have been more than either could bear.
"Plenty of room at the Hotel California" the song said, and Nick prayed it was right.
It was, and he held the copper key to Room 202 tightly in his hand. Smiling, he dialed Kevin's number.
