Alone
He watched, numb, as they burned the bodies.
Illyria had gone to get Wesley. Spike had lifted Gunn into his arms. He’d have nothing to do with it.
He heard the crackling, smelt the burning flesh. He could taste the ashes in the air, feel the utter stillness, the finality. Why did he always have to be the one to survive? Why was it always him that was left at the end of it all?
He felt a hand on his back, and suddenly there was Spike.
You’re not the only one, he thought he heard him say. Not alone.
Salt
He shut his ears, using the childish theory, you can’t see me, I can’t see you. Also, he would’ve hoped he couldn’t hear the pleas anymore.
“Please, Angel. Don’t do this. Don’t leave me here alone!”
“You’re just gonna drop everything and go, then? Pull the Big Hero act? You’re not anymore, you know that. You’re just a regular Joe, like me. We had something, you know.”
and, the most painful,
“Not gonna look back, are you? Don’t wanna be no pillar o’ salt. Guess I can’t blame you. You never did look back.”
He noticed that it had stopped, and he dared not look into his eyes. Instead, he glanced over and to the right, and put the car in drive. “Take care of yourself.”
He pulled out into the street and cursed ever buying a convertible. His eyes were stinging from the strong wind (A storm was coming. He was leaving.) He didn’t look back. Spike was right. But he looked in the rearview. A figure leaned against the lamppost, his arms wrapped around him tightly in a too-big silk shirt. He waved, lifting an arm and limply moving his wrist, once, twice.
Salt ran down Angel’s eyes.
