Angel looked up as he heard the quietly whispered words from the distraught Slayer. He thought she was talking to him, trying to comfort him.
He was wrong.
Instead of seeing Buffy's tear-filled green eyes staring at him with love and hope, he watched in horror as the Slayer ran Xander through with the sword of Acathla. Rage poured through the vampire like he'd never known and in an instant, he was on his feet.
"You stupid bitch!" he shouted as backhanded the surprised girl with all the preternatural strength he possessed. He watched as the small girl sailed through the air before striking her head against a brick planter, knocking her out cold.
Angel didn't even realize he had slipped into his game face until he heard a quietly whispered, "Angelus?"
He turned and smiled at Xander, his face softening at the sight of his boy in pain. Quickly, he approached his own, his hand automatically reaching out to remove the source of pain. As he tried to remove the sword, Xander cried out, gripping the hand on the hilt and holding it tight.
"No. Please. It's hurts."
"I know, Xander," Angel whispered, soft and gentle. "I know."
"Why?" Xander asked, his voice barely more than a whisper. "Why did she do this?"
"It's the prophecy," Angel explained. "It says blood opens the portal and blood will close it. Fucking Watcher even read the wrong translation incorrectly. They didn't know that Acathla would only take the one it wanted regardless of who opened the portal."
Xander nodded his understanding. Angel just smiled, amazed at the boy's ability to forgive.
Fingers began to trace the vampire's pronounced ridges and Angel suddenly realized he was still in his game face. Slowly, the vampire's face bled away, replaced by the beautiful human mask. Xander looked deep into the dark chocolate eyes, searching for something.
"What's happening?" Xander asked, confused.
"Shh. Don't worry about it," Angel whispered, his hand reaching up to brush a sweaty lock of sable hair from the boy's brow. Over his shoulder, the vampire watched as Acathla yawned ever wider, readying to accept its warrior.
Angel leaned in, brushing his lips to the trembling boy's. The kiss was soft and tender and comfort for both of them.
"I love you," Xander whispered, their lips still brushing despite the rush of wind behind them.
"I love you," Angel answered, trailing his fingertips through the tracks of the boy's tears. "Close your eyes."
Xander complied immediately and the vampire trailed gentle kisses down the boy's jaw before licking the tender throat.
His fangs slid in to the hilt and Angel watched as Acathla yawned wide, hoping the demon would see them as one.
There was a snap and gasp and great pulling. A flash of light and then they were gone.
All that was left to prove they'd ever been there at all was the sword sticking from the demon's belly and the pool of Xander's blood at the demon's feet.
tbc...
Ok, people. One more chapter to wrap all this insanity up. I hope you're not too diasppointed.
