Drusilla made ladyfingers and blood pudding for Spike’s first birthday. Angelus watched from the shadows as his children fed.

Afterward, when the fingers were drained and the delicate bowls held only clots, Angelus saw Spike slip away.

The faint rasp of the fledgling’s feet on the rooftop shingles made him easy to follow.

The houses thinned into marsh, but Spike kept on going. If the boy was hunting here... Much as he abhorred Dru’s wailing, Angelus would kill the child before he let him gorge on animals.

Spike kept on until he reached a monstrous Theatre, then slowed to merge with the milling crowd. Angelus snarled as he read the sign outside: “Alexandra Theatre presents Romeo and Juliet.”

He pushed his way to a box seat, allowing the heady scent of churning blood to calm him. A young couple joined him and he met the woman’s eyes until she blushed.

He watched her throat until a voice onstage caught his attention.

“Is the day so young?”

Angelus turned in disbelief. Dru’s willful child pranced through Romeo’s steps in an obscene parody of human movement.

Angelus’ hands clenched. Was the upstart trying to make him a laughing stock?

His first instinct was to tear the boy limb from limb, but he forced himself to stay in his seat. This needed to be taken care of quietly. Memorably.

He waited through the jaw-grating agony of the love story and bit his lip on laughter as Juliet slumped forward. When the curtain finally closed the girl beside him was sniveling into her handkerchief; Angelus snapped her neck before shoving through the crowd to get backstage.

When he smelled fresh blood, he flung the dressing room door off its hinges.

Juliet’s dark hair spilled over Spike’s hands, clotted with blood. Her head lolled forward against his doublet; her heart beat sluggishly as Spike released her in shock.

Angelus caught her easily and pressed forward into Spike.

“If you so much as lick the blood from your lips,” Angelus hissed, “I’ll rip your heart out.” He tore into the girl’s neck, but she was still.

He tossed her aside in disgust.

“So,” he whispered dangerously. “This is what you do when you’re not with us? You make an idiot of yourself for humans?” He lifted Spike’s chin with one hand and the child squeaked as his feet left the floor.

Angelus leaned forward, flicking his tongue against Spike’s ear. “Deny thy father now, little William. I will not be made to look a fool.”

Then he licked his lips and leaned in, stealing the girl’s blood from Spike’s tongue and teeth before sliding a canine into Spike’s lip. Spike went stiff, then lax as Angelus sipped blood from the puncture.

“I’m sorry,” Spike whispered as Angelus drew back.

“Is that all?”

“I’m sorry, father,” Spike managed.

Angelus released him. “Show me.”

He did—beautifully, silently, and with just enough fear to make the victory truly sweet.

Perhaps Drusilla hadn’t done so badly, after all.

De Rien!

I agree, after all, underneath that 'Spike the vampire' persona, he really is the young english poet at heart.

That too, lol.
