Pride of Place
Fandom: Angel
Rating: PG
Pairing: Spike/Lindsey (one-sided Lindsey/Angel and Spike/Angel)
Notes: Slightly AU. Angel is more corrupted by the influence of W&H. Lindsey doesn’t work with Eve nor adopt the “Doyle” persona. He and Spike bond over something (or someone) else.
Disclaimer: I am not Joss Whedon, and sometimes, I am glad.
Warnings; Tiny reference to het and general not-so-niceness on Angel’s part.

Angel thinks he has it all: the cars, the women, the law firm. He thinks he’s so high and mighty. Spike chides him each time he wrecks a car, each time he describes each way he’s had she-who-shall-not-be-named, each night he helps the hopeless without a team of lawyers behind him. (Lindsey hides beneath his tattoos, watching Angel slip slightly from his place of pride.)

Angel thinks he knows what this is about: Spike’s jealous. He wants the cars, the love, the sense of belonging. Angel reminds him each time he hops in the driver’s seat, each time he mentions those who’ve loved him, each moment where someone calls him “sir.” (Lindsey curses, throwing his beer across the room. Angel thinks he’s so high and mighty.)

Angel thinks it’s just a game: the wrecked cars, the (slightly familiar) scent of Someone on his flesh, the rounds of Annoy-the-Boss during office hours. It’s just what Spike does, because Spike is immature. So Angel pushes back. He snaps, he insults, he throws him through doors and windows. In the end, he’s the one that rides that elevator to the top. (Lindsey clenches his fists outside Wolfram & Hart’s doors, so close to overstepping the boundary.)

Angel always had it easy: cursed with the soul, now leading the most powerful company in countless dimensions. He was always better than Spike, always squirmed his way out of Lindsey’s traps. Yet, no matter what he has done, neither can tear themselves away. Maybe Angel’s worth it. Maybe he’s the top prize. For now, they’ll take comfort in the race, striving for someone they can’t obtain and probably don’t deserve, but have an unquestionable need for. (Spike tastes of anguish and cigarettes, complementing Lindsey’s beer and bitterness perfectly. Angel sleeps on his bed of silken sheets.)
