Five Times Jack Sensed the Doctor
Fandom: Doctor Who/Torchwood
Rating: PG
Pairing: Jack/Doctor
Disclaimer: Russell is wonderful man we all love to roll our eyes at, and thank for bringing us these boys.
i.
The flash of a tan coat disappearing down an alley; a slip of bright blue amongst the dull browns and greys of Cardiff; spiked hair on a thin frame; explosions without explanations; alien invaders.
He’s been here. The Doctor has been here, and he’s always a step behind. He thinks to call out, to wave his arms and say “I’m here.” But the Doctor knows he’s here, the same as Jack knows the Doctor is there.
He watches a blue-suited man run across the street, followed by a cute woman and someone angry.
“Run for your life,” Jack whispers, smiling.
ii.
“It was like this weird . . .”
“And then there was this . . .”
“I turn the corner, trying to find this whale of a . . .”
“I knew it was him, y’know. ‘Cause of that ruckus his ship makes. That . . .”
Out of all the people he questions after each near-encounter with the Doctor, none of them quite know how to imitate the beautiful, terrible sounds of Space bending over Time. Jack smiles to himself each time someone tries to describe it.
He is always one step behind, following the echoes of his Doctor.
iii.
He hates tea. The bland, warm taste of it. The bitter film it left on his tongue. The way it clung to his taste buds and never let go. It was terrible.
Except for when Rose made him a cup, or in the rare instance the Doctor somehow counted wrong and made an extra cup. Jack never had the heart to refuse anything they gave him. It helped that he always snuck in an extra spoonful of sugar.
It’s just coffee these days for Jack, and that’s fine. Perfect, even. Some nights, though, he can use a miscounted, discarded cup.
iv.
There are some scents that don’t mean anything to him any longer. The memories they call up are too numerous and too jumbled to make sense: the ocean, gunpowder, dust, dampness, metal, and blood.
There are others that stop him dead in his tracks: Ianto’s coffee (especially after a long day), Rose’s perfume, stardust, sandalwood (especially saturated on old leather), and a new scent which can’t decide between sweet vanilla or pungent clover.
Jack thinks he is wishing too hard when the latter assaults him as he returns to his office. It’s been a long day (and a long time).
v.
His hand lies unmoving on the center of his chest. On top of the silk tie. The soft cotton of his shirt. Above the two hearts beating away. Hello. We’re here.
Jack blinks, almost stepping back, but deciding to step forward instead. Solid arms wrap around his frame, and the Doctor smiles. Hello, Jack. I’m here.
After searching for so long, finding him, then walking away, the Doctor is back. He’s really back, in Jack’s company. It doesn’t matter why. There’s a familiar face in front of him, a familiar feel under his hands. Jack smiles. Hello, Doctor. You’re here.
