Title Waking
Fandom: Life on Mars/Merlin
Movie Title Prompt: Dip huet seung hung [Bloodshed of Two Heroes]
Rating/Warnings: PG, minor spoilers for the first season Ashes to Ashes
Pairing: Sam Tyler/Merlin
Disclaimer: Nothing here is mine.
In many ways, Sam hadn’t woken up. (He wakes during the night, certain that the sweat dripping down his forehead is blood, but Annie assures him it was all a dream.) He was awake in 2006, dreaming of 1973. (He dreams of a man whose lips taste like Annie’s tears.) Then he jumped, awoke, everything returned to normal. (Why does he still hear things that shouldn’t be, like wheat blowing in an autumn breeze and iron clashing in the heat of battle?) But he was still dreaming.
Seven years after he decided his own fate, it happens; Sam has another accident. During a routine pursuit, he hallucinates words that mean Remember and Soul and loses control of his vehicle. He crashes into the river. His skull bounces off the steering wheel and blood rushes down his forehead. He panics as the water starts to creep in, then a hand grasps his wrist. “You never get a boring life, do you?” the man from his dreams says, wearing a fond smile.
And Sam remembers, finally awake. “I wouldn’t want to make it too easy on you, Merlin.”
(The police will say Sam is dead, but they will never find his body.)
