Alex stops, one high heeled shoe hovering in mid-air, fingers falling from the door handle. Gene is on her desk, package open beside his leg, Sam Tyler’s leather jacket in his hands. She knows he knows she’s been talking to Manchester. That he’s broken into her desk isn’t the surprise.

It’s that there are tears falling from his eyes.

“Guv....”

“I didn’t kill him.” The truth: finally. “Sam and I....”

“You were friends.” It’s blindingly obvious and she makes the word encompass it all. “What happened that day?”

“His car...” He lifts his head. “It wasn’t cause. It was effect.”
