Case Closed

Jack Bailey had heard that if you had an issue with someone, you should write a letter to that person for the sole purpose of getting things off your chest, and then throw it away.

Why not, he thought. He had been alone in the office for most of the evening completing police reports, and he needed a break.

Jack knew that this activity was usually intended as a way to vent anger.  But his focus was going to be entirely different. He would pour out his heart in writing, and say the things he wouldn’t dare confess to Dan Stark in person.

He grabbed paper and pen, and began. With total honesty, he described his feelings of repulsion the day he met Dan.  He smiled as he explained how repulsion gradually changed to an appreciation of their differences – and how, because of those differences, they complemented one another and made a perfect team.  He elaborated, suggesting that he would like to be part of a romantic team.

Jack’s cheeks reddened as he wrote the next paragraph. He listed all the physical attributes that he found attractive in his partner.  Sure, Dan might be a bit overweight, but he was a sturdy guy who practically oozed sex with that slow, confident swagger of his. Jack adored Dan’s sexy smile, his infectious chuckle, and his devilish, twinkling eyes. And yes; amazingly, he had even grown to like “the ‘stache.”

Jack put his final touch on the letter by writing in large letters, I love you, Detective Dan Stark. He affixed his signature and sighed. Taking the letter into both hands, he held it up and leaned back in his chair to re-read what he had written.

As he read, he became aware of a curious warmth in the air and a strong smell of alcohol. A chill ran down his spine. Damn! How long had Dan been standing behind him?

Before Jack could dispose of it, Dan had snatched the letter from his hands. Jack swiveled around in his chair, mortified.

Dan only grinned. Then he lowered his eyes to the paper. As he read, he made silent commentary; nodding his head, raising his eyebrows, chewing his gum, and smiling all the while.

Jack sighed and lowered his head. No use saying anything now; Dan had all the evidence he needed in writing. But what would Dan do when he finished reading? Laugh? Groan with disgust? Tell him off for even considering such a relationship? Go straight to Ruiz the next day and demand to be assigned a new partner – and then, tell her why?

Jack looked up again when he heard Dan’s footsteps. He watched as Dan sauntered to a nearby desk, scribbled something on the letter, and returned to hand it back to him.

Jack gulped. Then, he read: I love you too, Jack. Case closed!

He instantly found himself being pulled out of his chair into a crushing embrace and succumbing to a fervent kiss.

Speech could wait.
